If you thinking to buy 166 you must be ready morally, and most importantly - financially.If you want to buy used 166 because you like it ,think twice.Service check before you buy 166 i would really recommended.
2.0L TS is to weak for 166 and its low life engine.Similar engines was on 155-156 with all problems and low life resource (125000miles-150000miles)
Quite rare engine on 166 came from 164GTV 2.0L turbo.This engine requires careful maintenance,engine is noisy.If engine emits deaf rhythmic sounds, this indicates a misaligned valve and this is real bad ,typically, after disassembling the engine you will see faulty VALVE PULLEY or in worst case camshaft fault.
2.5V6-3V6 - 3L engine have better dynamic but fuel consumption is similar .These engines have few problems,first - engines are heavily loaded from the thermal point of view,minor problems in cooling system may cause engine overheating(watch radiator leaks or blocked cooling system)Very unreliable water pump,if you need to change water pump you must take off and timing belt,so better and cheaper change both.Another overheating problem, head cover gasket ,at the slightest suspicion that head gasket is faulty just walk away ,its very expensive to fix.
Like on all alfa's regular timing belt(chain)checks is essential .
Another common problem engine light on dash board ,engine power losing on acceleration.After restart problem is going away but after some time its coming back,symptoms are usually associated with malfunction of the throttle position sensor or the gas pedal position sensor or both.
Gearboxes on 166 is fairly reliable but everything is breaking with time.
To diagnose the suspension problems you must take your car to specialist ,you cant diagnose any problems by your self ,just kicking the wheel.
Alfa romeo 166 must be sold with full code -card bundle-if no code-card dont buy just walk away.
